The Bar JR breeding program has a strong emphasis on balanced traits trying to avoid extremes without balance on the other end. We target having 75% of the bulls with 75% of their EPD numbers in the top 35% ranking within the breed. We put major importance on the female side, as they are the cornerstone of producing superior quality cattle that will work along the entire beef industry spectrum (calving, on cow performance, feedlot growth and efficiency, carcass quality and pounds, along with terrific replacement females. Bar JR Gelbvieh utilizes an extensive AI program with a 2 cycle synchronization / detection process followed by 30 days with the cleanup bulls. Ranch manager Mary Hill views and reviews the genetic traits (GE-EPDs, EPDs, DNA data, carcass data, and mating histories) during the sire selection process. The calving season begins the 2nd week of April and is kept to under 60 days; producing great uniformity in our calves. The cows calve outside in the elements with a watchful eye if the weather gets extreme. Each calf is weighed and tagged within 12 hours of birth and evaluated by our ranch veterinarian, Dr. Jeanne Rankin, who developed our animal health protocols. DNA samples are collected at birth to aid in future matings, replacement females, and bull selections.
We cull deep into the male calves; with only the best genetics (calving ease, growth, carcass traits, docility, and fertility) making it on to the bull sale group. We make the first cull at birth then again at branding with additional evaluations/analysis throughout the summer with cuts made mid-summer and again at weaning. The steer calves are sold in the fall to go into the feedlot where we request carcass data on all animals, as all animals have electronic ear tags. We use the carcass data as part of the mating determinations in future years and to track carcass info on offspring for our bull buyers.
Gelbvieh genetics are well known throughout the beef industry for their maternal strengths and superior growth along with outstanding docility. With attributes such as: calving ease, more pounds of calf weaned per cows exposed, added fertility, early puberty, greater cow herd longevity and heavier carcass weights, just to name a few, Gelbvieh offer genetics that work for the commercial cattle business. Bar JR Gelbvieh produces those cows and bulls. Gelbvieh cattle have shown year in and year out that they produce more pounds weaned per cow exposed than any other breed. That is money in your pocket. Calving ease is an important factor many cattlemen consider when selecting a herd sire. Cattle producers like the peace of mind knowing their calves will be born unassisted and alive. Getting more live calves on the ground is the first step to getting more pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed and also equates to more potential for future profit. With the high costs associated with the development or purchase of replacement females, sustained production in a herd is essential. Gelbvieh females are proven to stay in the herd longer.
